BBC article on Child Obesity

I don’t know how many of my readers are parents, but if you are, or if you were obese as a child, this article by the BBC about child obesity being a form of child neglect might interest you. The British Medical Association was set to debate this topic in June; as of July 2 I haven’t seen any follow up on the report. You can read some very strong comment on the issue over at Big Fat Blog.

We do spend some time in denial over what we do to ourselves and why, but how much of that denial really spreads to our children? Children do learn and internalize habits from watching parents, and if parents are making bad food choices for the entire family, it will affect the child’s health. However, is this really something government should be regulating? Beyond giving children food and shelter, what are the legal obligations? Are we legally obligated to raise our children to be thin? Is that even realistic?
