Igigi is now working with the relatively new fiber of Tencel.(TM) A brand name version of the fabric Lyocell, this textile is sort of a halfway between cotton and silk, classified – sort of – as a “subrayon” species. From the environmental perspective, it’s an interesting fiber: it’s made from wood pulp and is spun through the use of an organic chemical solvent. How the solvent is made is a bit of a blank; it’s not clear whether the byproduct is 100% environmentally friendly.
Still, for the vegan set, Tencel is a bit of a miracle fabric. It can, when prepared properly, imitate leather, suede, and silk – three big vegan “thou shalt nots.” Even without the vegan impetus, this is considered somewhat of a miracle fabric – it drapes well, it’s wrinkle-resistant, and, a big plus in the environmentally friendly department, it’s biodegradable. My only question is whether that means that, after too many washings, if I threw it in the washer, would I someday only pull out a handful of buttons and some thread?
