It’s spring - people are going to wear sweaters anyway, so it might as well be trendy as well as habitual. The trick here is the “duster length” sweater - wearing something of that length requires some adjustments to the layers of clothing beneath.
A sweater as a fashion statement is different from a sweater as pragmatic layering. If you’re layering, it’s fine to look bulky. If you’re doing it to be fashionable, not so much. It’s important that what you wear underneath it be form fitting but not tight, and be congruent with the sweater - so it looks like something you should be wearing with a sweater. A bulky dress is out, and in most cases, so are jeans. However, a well-cut trouser and tunic top would work, as would any type of form fitting dress, especially if you can belt it.
The type of sweater you choose will also dictate what you wear beneath. And remember, always - good bra, good shoes.

I have one long sweater, a cardigan actually, and everything you’ve said here is SO true! They can look great, masking some trouble spots while being wonderfully fashionable, but they can also make you look just frumpy if they’re not layered right. You’ve listed some wonderful tips here!
