2008 Alight.com: Donna Rico Designs

Alight.com sent out one of its emails last week, boasting the addition of designer Donna Rico. So I decided to take a look. If you’re looking for a special occasion dress – a friend’s wedding, an anniversary, just celebrating the fabulousness that is you – it’s definitely worth taking a look. The designs use a lot of the plus-friendly  design stops that have come out in the last decade; each dress has shape and design detailing. Rico also doesn’t just stick with one body type design; it looks like she tries to cover the different body types. While some of the print choices are iffy, the shapes may make up for them as long as color choice goes well with skin tone.

Note the shirring at the waistThe jungle print isn’t my personal style, but the asymmetrical cut with the waist shirring gives this a good figure-flattering overall look. It’s a way to play up the legs and cleavage.

While I don’t think anyone in the middle classes actually has garden parties anymore, this dress is just adorable and makes me think of some of the looks I’ve seen on Beth Ditto. It can also last into early fall with heels and a classic sweater.

I almost passed this dress because I’m still wary about polka dots besides wearing them myself. However, I stopped because of this tie. While I’m not one for adding things that dangle across the front on plus women, I do like the variation on the design.

This is named “Spring Goddess dress” although it looks to me more like a northern/late winter dress and isn’t reminiscent of the Greek inspired looks I’ve seen elsewhere. That said, with the side tie at the waist and the piping it’s a fairly plus-friendly dress, assuming the print works in real life.

  1. On an hourglassy figure, any of those dresses would be hawt.

For women with a pronounced tummy that bottom dress would be disastrous. That boring neckline and whatever that belt thing are not lovely. And that 70’s upholstery print? It’s going to be like a walking optical illusion

I am getting married for the 2nd time and need a dress – I love Donna Rico dresses but the ones above are not quite what I am looking for right now. I hope you have more suggestions.

    Thank you
