Before there was Sex and the City, there was another show about women with glamorous lives and personalities that were, perhaps, not so glamorous. Long before we got to watch Carrie swill Cosmos with her galpals while talking about sex as though it were still a bit scandalous, the Brits were watching Eddy and Patsy get drunk, go to work, and come home to find new and inventive ways to torment Saffy. Yes, this was Absolutely Fabulous, a show that gathered glamor, alcoholism and drug abuse, body issues and the pressures of living in a dysfunctional home into a female Three Stooges arrangement.
It’s also a great example of one of the major differences in US and UK media: “normal” women are cast, and it’s fine to see someone who is a size 8 or above on television. Besides, when it comes to women and disordered behavior…well, things haven’t changed much.
I love this show and still watch it when it is repeated Eddy, Saffy and Patsy are such great viewing.
