Scooter Bottoms?

I found these at Kohl’s online, and I don’t know anyone who wears them, but they’re available in up to 3x:

I like the idea of light-weight summer skirts, but I’m not clear on what makes these special. Are they best worn on a Vespa? Does anyone who reads Fat Chic wear these? Would you be willing to explain the concept, pretty please?

They have shorts underneath. That’s what scooters are, in this context – skirts with shorts underneath. For modesty? To prevent chafing? I don’t know why. I do know that I hate them. Every one I’ve ever tried or owned has been awful – the shorts are thin and baggy, which means they don’t protect against chafing and they bunch up between my thighs. So uncomfortable. Which is not to say that they are all like that – just the ones I’ve had. Perhaps some are better? I don’t know. I *do* know that the same thing can be accomplished – perhaps much more effectively, even – by wearing bike shorts (or similar) under your skirts.

  2. Scooter skirts usually have built-in shorts underneath the skirt (originally for modesty when riding a scooter?). These would be a different change for hiking, tennis, any kind of outdoor activity where you might want to look really cute, but have the shorts underneath to prevent the “chub rub”, and they would automatically match.
    According to backcountry.com:

The North Face Equator Ripstop Scooter Skirt – Women’s

With built-in shorts for added coverage, The North Face Women’s Equator Ripstop Scooter Skirt gives you a fun option for your summer hikes and travels. The Equator Ripstop Scooter Skirt’s quick-drying, lightweight fabric keeps you cool as you check out ancient ruins, and a hidden passport pocket keeps your cash safe.

Bottom Line: The North Face Equator Ripstop Scooter Skirt keeps you covered with built-in shorts, so you climb up the hill to see the Southern Cross without mooning anyone.

backcountry.com only carries up to a size 12, C. J. Banks carries up to a size 24 (according to results from a Yahoo search of “scooter skirts”).

Scooter skirts are skorts. They have the little shorts attached inside them. Some have the skirt “flap” only in front, too, and look like regular shorts from the back.

I love a cute short skirt in the summer, and I understand the practicality and the comfort of skorts/scooter skirts, but they are a garment that just screams, “Plus size!” to me, not unlike the muu-muu. They seem to be marketed only for plussies and tennis players anymore. :-(

So… in theory good, in practice awful. I opt for the bike/exercise shorts under my skirts, too – the trouble I run into is that I don’t just get chub rub these days, I get hives if I wander around with too much rub! Thank you all for explaining the mystery of these to me – I was genuinely baffled.

  5. I hate scooter skirts so much. All because every one I’ve ever had/tried on would bunch up right in my crotch and then my crotch would be sore.

I love the idea of them, but I’d rather wear unattached booty shorts or bike shorts if I’m wearing a shorter skirt so they don’t do that crotch bunch thing.
