Bottles of some notable commercial perfumes: (...Image via Wikipedia

One of the paradoxical things about running a perfume business is that I am exponentially less of a product junkie than I was before I started making my own stuff. This is in part because, yes, I’m using my own stuff, and also because I have become riddled with allergy problems – these days, I only know I’ll be hive free if I am the person present and putting the ingredients together myself. I can’t call for wistful bans for whatever product “triggers my allergies” and frankly, I’m not that self-centered.

I can, however, encourage you all to take care of your lovely selves through the changing seasons. For folks reading in Australia and other places where it’s just warming up, check for an entry I wrote one May or June – there’s some summer goodies there for you.

Here’s some basic tips for winter – basically, it’s all about the skin.

1. Keep drinking water like it’s summer. You need hydration and detoxification just as much in winter, just for different reasons. Since you’re all closed up indoors with the germs that float around, you’re going to need to make it easier to flush out your system. This will also help keep skin clear, assuming you don’t load up on sugary drinks.

2. Keep taking your vitamins. Your skin always looks sallow after you get a cold.

3. Exfoliate only every other day – or maybe even only once a week. Your skin needs its natural oils and even some of that microscopic debris to protect itself from drying out in colder weather.

4. Cleanse and moisturize daily. Watch out for those anti-acne cleansers; unless you’re on a doctor prescribed regiment, definitely opt for something much more gentle, as even the creamy ones can dehydrate the bejeezus out of your skin.

Winter is coming – take care of you!
