Most of the extra-warm days are behind us now and fall is getting earnest – and that means the crunch is on to find a coat that transitions to winter. While there’s a certain point where all stylishness must step aside for the sake of simple survival (something you learn quickly living in Minnesota) on the way there you can be a little vain and enjoy the status that comes from having a simple, nice coat!
While I’m pretty unthrilled with what Liz Claiborne turns out for plus, the outerwear is unparalleled and typically transcends body shape. I like this A-line trench style; it’s short enough to be functional on mass transit, but still nicely shaped.
I also like the above options – the beige one that buttons up the neck is useful if you don’t want to wear a scarf, and the grey one adds the wonderful benefit of a good silhouette.
Mostly because it’s bright pink.
This one is because I love the piping, and brown is an unusual color for outerwear, which is usually beige, black or brights.
The big belt and play on black and white appeals to me – it’s another really good working coat for fall into winter, though in really cold areas you will definitely want something longer.
Houndstooth is still a classic, although I’m not always comfortable with what the pattern can do for the overall silhouette. However, I’m open-minded that it can be worn right, and make a really sophisticated look.
