The Trapeze Top

It looks as though the trapeze top is replacing the babydoll for the question mark garment of choice among fatshionistas. While it definitely can be frumpy, just like the ever-fraught babydoll, with the right cut it can also be pretty darned nice.

Trapeze Top

I still discourage pairing it with leggings, but over something fitted, whether that be a skirt or actual pants, I think this could work, especially if layered with some longer jewelry.

Here are a few Etsy examples to help you visualize:

  1. Dahling, the problem I have with trapeze tops is that I am quite buxom, the result being that it always looks as though I am wearing a maternity top. HORRORS! Empire waists are another waist of my time; I am long-waisted and my shapely buttocks look about a foot lower than they should be. WHEN will plus-size designers put waists in their clothing? Some of us larger lovelies do have them, you know!

As in all fashion, but especially plus, two factors make it all complicated:
    1. There’s a whole LOT of diversity in body type among the plus sizes. What works on one gal is epic fail on another. And even then, some garments pushed on us are just full of fail no matter who wears them.

    2. Cut – there’s some awful trapeze just like there were horrific babydolls out there. Yet I saw plenty of pictures in the fatshionista livejournal group where women made them work. It all goes back to body type and cut.
