Outer Accessories

While Making It Big hasn’t been received all that well by Fat Chic readers, I keep having high hopes for them and I think they are in their way paying attention while doing their best to stay true to their own goals and already established clientele. They are among the very few plus clothiers that really expand into the very large sizing, fitting women with waists up to 75 inches. Someone needs to serve that market, and I’m glad that they do; unfortunately, at that point, a garment fitting at all matters possibly more than style. Since my main criteria for giving a business attention is showing signs that they genuinely care about their customers, I am choosing to give them attention – and pointing out some of their stuff that I think might actually be usable, especially since they have stepped up in fun ways in the accessories department.

  1. I like the clothes at MIB, but I can’t afford them. $50 or more for pants is way out of my budget, not to mention that they don’t carry the style I really like (knit, elastic waist, straight legs, with pockets). So far, no one is carrying those pants anymore, so I’ll be buying fabric and making my own (believe me, I’ve looked in every catalog that caters to fat women, and no one carries those pants anymore).

  2. I’ve been wearing Making It Big for over 10 years. I wear my tie-dyes the most, but the cutout lace blouses are dressy staples and my knee-length wool coat looks like it’s going to last forever. Then there’s the 7 pair of Relaxed Knit Pants.

I wouldn’t mind them being cheaper, but I also understand that a small manufacturer like Making It Big or Plus Woman are going to have more costs per garment than stores that import everything. (Not that buying American is always better, just that I find it hard to fault someone for paying American wages when I earn American wages.)
