Evan’s black short playsuit
Let me preface this by saying I’m still not convinced that jumpsuits are a great choice on plus size women of a certain shape. In my case, putting one on would make me look and feel a bit like an Oompa Loompa who’d been shot up with growth hormone. So, given my discomfort with looks that come with sleeves and pant legs, you can imagine how very challenged I am by the next variation on the jumpsuit: the playsuit.
I wore something like it when I was about 15; I was also a solid size 14 (it would be a size 12 by today’s standards) and well…I was 15. As a 33 year old, even were I magically a size 10 tomorrow, this would make me hesitate. But again, I’ve got the extra belly and hip action going on. Another women who has more packaging in the bosom but less around the hips might just throw on a scarf and some gladiator sandals and have a good time with it.
So what I want to know – who should wear it? Barrel shapes? Hour glasses? At what age? And how would such a person wear it?

Oh no, no way. That is just too reminiscent of the gym suits we had to wear for phys ed in high school (and those sucked dirty ditch water, let me tell you). Granted, for me that was almost 40 years ago, and I don’t have the shape to wear them now (but I had the shape back then, and even then, those things didn’t look good unless you were a size 2). And that’s not even taking into consideration the fact that you have to practically get undressed to use the bathroom. I don’t know what designers are thinking when they create clothing like that, but it’s sure not our comfort.
As you know I’m a big advocate of jumpsuits on plus sizes but even I hesitate a little when it comes to playsuits. I think they would work best on someone with an hourglass figure with the waist pulled in with a belt. Hour glass figures seem to suit everything! Barrel shapes might make the playsuit look baby romper- ish and thats not a good look on anyone apart from babies. I’ve never seen a playsuit on someone bigger than a 12/14.
As for age, I think they look best on people in their 20’s unless its tailored to make it look a sharper in which case someone older would be able to wear it. Like this one for example…… http://stylefinder.com/items/?id=125546 Imagine it with a slightly longer leg.
Is it bad that I laughed at “Oompa Loompa”? I’m kind of with you on the age thing. I might have worn it as a preteen but as an adult I’m not sold on the look.
Vesta – You had playsuits for phys ed? No fair. I had these stupid navy, they called them shorts, I called them panties. The only reason I hated gym was because they were required uniform. And we had to share the gym with guys. The standards have since changed but they were a fat girls nightmare.
