Lifetime’s forthcoming: Drop Dead Diva, with plus size actress/character
On July 12, Lifetime is airing their new summer series Drop Dead Diva which is about a model who dies in an accident and comes back in the body of a plus size lawyer. It’s unclear what the lawyer did to deserve such a punishment, but hey, it’s Lifetime. The series will star the awesome Margaret Cho, so I’m willing to give it the three episode try. If it doesn’t win me over by then, it won’t. According to a brief report in USA Today, the show is intended to redefine the beauty paradigm.
Given that Lifetime programming has a history of weakened and muddled messages along with some really bad programming (there are women who refer to Lifetime as television for women who hate themselves) I’m concerned. Certainly last years Nikki Blonsky pic wasn’t horrible – but it was mixed. Perhaps this show won’t suffer quite as much from the need to try to please everyone.

What’s a plus size lawyer?
I wish I got lifetime. I look forward to reading more of what you have to say about it. So is Cho the lawyer or a supporting character?
What did the lawyer did to deserve the oprobrium of a society that hates heavy women a lot more than terrorists and child molosters? She probably worked hard, went to school and then worked harder to pay her bills and student loans. She toiled away in a profession which holds its members responsible for what every member of society does at every time. She probably worked in some rinky dink firm for a lot less money than people realize where she was at the mercy of every do gooder who thought she could do more for those who do less for themselves. This obviously is a show aimed at the former mean girl set who want to feel that they are better than those who were smarter than they are.
