Maxi dresses have become virtually ubiquitous in downtown Minneapolis. I watch women gliding down the sidewalk, some sipping chilled coffee drinks while others somehow manage to look graceful while hauling laptop bags and the occasional briefcase. It’s those laptop-and-briefcase toters that give me pause. Maxi dresses are lovely – but wearing them in an office? Really? Some do make it a touch more formal by adding a fitted blazer over top, or by opting for heels instead of flats. Even so, it seems – odd. Very much out of place.
While more and more companies do skew casual, or at least skew casual in the summer months, such a dramatic summer dress does seem a bit over-the-top for a work environment. Also, there’s a practical reason I’m puzzled: most offices use wheeled chairs. I know from bitter experience that those rollers often roll RIGHT over any long skirt or dress you might be wearing. It kills the dress and can at times actually injure you. So it seems puzzling to me. Is this a thing now, maxi dresses as work wear?
