Gloves are just a standard part of daily life for anyone who lives in a cold climate. So standard are they that I actually have gloves I wear in layers – the fingerless gloves first, the knit ones over top, the heavy duty ones when the dreaded “minus” starts appearing on the digital thermometer. I forget sometimes that gloves have a decorative aspect. The days are (mostly) gone where women wear gloves to formal occasions – unless it’s an accent to a prom dress, most of us set out to show off our manicures. The society I know is a pretty un-calloused, so there’s really not much reason to wear gloves beyond protection from temperature extremes.
Yet gloves, by their relative non-necessity, do add an element of fun to an outfit. I’ve slowly started accumulating my own gloves to the point where I literally have a glove box that I can draw from every fall. It has striped gloves, fishnet gloves, lace gloves, black, red, and white opera gloves…and it’s all just a matter of finding the right time and place to wear them.
