Last spring Women’s Wear Daily declared that the “skirt suit” would be all the rage this fall. While I’m not sure “all the rage” is the right phrase so much as “women who are employed must make an effort to look employed, might as well make that stylish.” For those who live in cultural contexts that have more formality, the skirt suit is already part of your life. But I am curious to see if I’m going to see some women appear at local clubs in one – the sudden turn to what constitutes American formality would be fascinating to watch. If more than fifteen women showed up at one of those nightclubs wearing skirt suits, I’d be fascinated to see how their presence and appearance altered the usual dynamic of the place.
