Update from Lane Bryant-land
It's been a bit of a strange and unexpected day so far, but this may well be because that's what happens when I'm left to my own devices. It began before I arrived at the airport: my husband and I were eating breakfast when another diner paused and asked me if I'd been featured in this month's Guns and Ammo. I responded with, "No...that's a new [...]
Plus size news roundup for 5/24/2010
On a personal note: I am among the bloggers flying out to a conference hosted by Lane Bryant. Who else is going? Toronto store Voluptuous is getting some attention. Warning: website autoplays music. Can store owners please stop that? Does. Not. Make. Positive. Impression. Kansas City Star did a writeup of Qristyl Frazier's rising [...]
Plus size news roundup
NPR is running a story on the increasing appearance of plus size models in ads. This makes me want to attend more of those worldwide ad-award festivals, because I could swear that it it's somewhat more common overseas. Focuses on Ashley Graham of the infamous Lane Bryant ad. A shop in Port Angeles is grabbing attention with its plus size [...]
A big fat talk about money and plus size fashion shopping
I thought of this post before I heard the term "haul" blogs, but they relate. I'm horrified. Even if we were not going through one of the worst recessions in US history, I would find the idea of an Internet movement revolving around showing videos of all the excess crap a young woman buys completely mortifying. Women's liberty takes all the [...]
The body image episode of Glee
Manolo for the Big Girl's post mentioning Glee got me thinking. I'm unthrilled that Glee went with the after-school special style focus on Mercedes (Amber Riley, we've given her love before) for a body image based episode. I don't think it was bad, per se - or at least, no worse than anything else that fits within the range of hyperbolic satire. [...]
Plus size fashion and fatosphere news roundup
Congrats to Marianne Kirby and cohorts - Fatcast is already listed on Itunes as "new and noteworthy." If you missed it last week, she's also got some good thoughts on the never-ending bugaboo of bra shopping and how the simple act of finding a decent bra is also a socio-political situation every single time. A little late but still relevant: [...]
The visible woman – must read post by definatalie
Definatalie makes a body positive statement after some people on Facebook misused her image. She states with much eloquence what I still struggle to say, especially since the few trolls I get on Fat Chic are "fashion" trolls as opposed to the garden-variety "you're fat" types. I don't delve too deep into fat politics because it all gets [...]
That New Lane Bryant ad
This is the first plus size clothing ad to get national television play that I know of. As to any "controversy" I think that's just about Blackberry being stupid about their trademark.
Plus size media: Big Life
I'm actually surprised I haven't heard more from the fatosphere about this show. Perhaps it's the fall-off in bloggers, perhaps it's because we all thought Kirstie Alley was done with fat actress. I haven't seen the show, just the previews that ran in movie theaters. It seems like a lot of self-hatred still and it makes me sad, because it means [...]
