The prospect of Tomboy Tailor’s is exciting and progressive: true, high quality menswear for women of all sizes. Whether worn as a statement of fashion or a statement gender identity (or non-identity) there’s definitely demand for a place that supplies women trousers and suspenders rather than Spanx and skirts.
When DOMA failed a whole world opened up – and it flooded the doors of this shop. The flood became so great that they recently emailed customers with an apology. Between the powerful uptick in demand and trouble with vendors who did not understand the concept of “menswear” (but you’re chicks, right?) they wound up disappointing many customers – especially those who wanted clothing for their weddings.
An email sent to customers on July 14th read: “It has been both a time of celebration and a time of reflection and apology for us at Tomboy Tailors as we realize that because of our growing pains as a startup and delays in production as we iron out our production expectations from vendors (like producing men’s suits rather than women’s suits when we ask for men’s suits), we have disappointed a good number clients – and in some cases caused a good deal of stress in the week or weeks before weddings because of our production delays.”
Right now, Tomboy Tailor’s has a Kickstarter campaign aimed at improving their men’s shoe collection for women.
Note: While women in the video talk about being smaller sized, initial publicity showed women that qualified as plus size and the nature of tailoring involves fitting the clothing to the person rather than demanding that the person fit the clothing.
